Harvard University professor David Edwards believes his new breathable caffeine product AeroShot is a revolution in energy supplements. However, some lawmakers think the product is a recipe for danger.

The product is a lipstick sized capsule that dispenses caffeine powder when users puff on the tip. Each AeroShot delivers 100mg of caffeine, roughly the same amount as one large cup of coffee. The powder is lime-flavored and dissolves in the mouth. It is absorbed into the digestive tract, not the lungs.

Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York), who led the campaign against the dangers of the alcoholic energy drink, Four-Loko, said AeroShot is the next tool for kids looking to binge drink. Schumer called on the Food and Drug Administration to look into how the product is being sold.

AeroShot did not have to pass an FDA approval process before hitting shelves in New York, Massachusetts, and being sold online, because it is being marketed as a dietary supplement. There are no age restrictions on who can buy AeroShot. However the manufacturer, Breathable Foods, Inc., said the product is not intended for people under the age of 12.

“The good news is, caffeine is in and out of your system pretty fast. The problem is, let’s say they want to stay more awake so they can drink more. Oh, there’s always going to be that,” said Dr. Tim Howard, who operates a general family practice in Huntsville. “If you do it responsibly, say, first thing in the morning you don’t have time to get a cup of coffee you have one of these and you’ve got big meetings or something like that, then I don’t have any problems using it for that kind of situation.”

AeroShot executives said the product is not marketed toward children and even adults should not take more than three AeroShots in one day. How They Test
In the on-demand test researchers scan hundreds of thousands of malware samples and note what percentage each product eliminates. The retrospective test is similar, but by forcing each product to use old virus definitions it emulates proactive detection of zero-day threats. The whole product dynamic test challenges each product to resist infection by hundreds of active threats over a period of weeks. The performance test measures how much impact each product has on system performance.

AV-Comparatives runs those four tests twice each year. This year saw the introduction of a new removal test. Researchers gathered a collection of threats that had been detected by every tested product for at least six months and then challenged each product to fully remove those threats. The chart below shows all results from last year.

In this chart ADV+, ADV, and STD stand for ADVANCED+, ADVANCED, and STANDARD. An empty cell indicates that the product was tested but failed to reach the STANDARD level. A black cell with “n/a” in white letters simply means AV-Comparatives didn’t test that particular product. In a grey box, “n/a” means the vendor actively choose to abstain from the test.

Why would anyone abstain? A number of vendors believe that the retrospective test doesn’t accurately reflect their product’s capabilities. You can figure out which ones from the chart.

Kudos to Kaspersky
Although the raw test scores may differ, the test reports advise that all products with the same rating should be treated as equivalent. To this end, the researchers use a clustering technique rather than predefining hard cut-offs for each rating level.

For selecting the product of the year, researchers look for the greatest number of ADVANCED+ ratings. This year there was a single clear winner. Kaspersky aced every single test. The 2010 winner, F-Secure, missed by just one score of ADVANCED rather than ADVANCED+.

Any product that earned at least five ADVANCED+ ratings is designated a top rated product. Besides Kaspersky, Avira, Bitdefender, ESET, and F-Secure earned this honor.

I should point out that the Webroot product tested here is completely different from PCMag Editors’ Choice Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus. The report states, “It is very possible that Webroot’s results in future tests will improve as a result of the new engine.” Norton, our other Editors’ Choice, was named product of the year for 2009. It didn’t get top ratings in 2011, but did score a win specifically for effective malware removal and low performance impact.

Two years ago, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong hired the guy who saved Yahoo email, Brad Garlinghouse, and told him to go forth and create new products.

Armstrong even called Garlinghouse AOL’s “CEO of Silicon Valley.”

Then AOL went out and acquired a bunch of startups – including About.me and Things Lab – many of them for the product talent.

The company opened a some of its Palo Alto office space open to small startups and students, hoping they would provide an atmosphere of innovation. The office launched a new version of AOL Mail and a news aggregator app for iPads called Editions.

One AOLer in the Silicon Valley office describes the era as exciting and hopeful.

“It seemed to me a once in a life time chance to do something impossible,” he told us over the phone. “We were building some great stuff.”

He says times have changed.

First, AOL bought the Huffington Post in spring 2010. After the integration in the summer, it quickly became clear that Huffington Post’s engineers and product managers would be in charge of any products related to AOL’s media properties. That gave AOL’s west coast office a lot less work to do.

Then, in the fall, Garlinghouse left the company.

Our source inside AOL’s Silicon Valley’s office says all the changes have left the place feeling directionless.

“I don’t feel like they’re making decisions. What is their plan out here?”

He says AOL had a rare “toe-hold” in Silicon Valley, but that now it is “letting it fizzle.”

Soon, our source predicts, talent will start leaving. This source specifically worried that David Temkin, the guy in charge of AOL’s mobile products, will soon become a vulnerable target for poachers.

A source familiar with upper management’s view of AOL’s product strategy says the changes going on in AOL’s Palo Alto office have more to do with increased accountability, rather than an actual change in strategy.

This source says that during Garlinghouse’s tenure, the office launched a number of products that failed to deliver on the only two metrics that matter for AOL.

David Rubin, 50, and his company, CDR Financial Products Inc., were accused of running sham auctions for government agencies looking to invest money raised through municipal bond offerings. The contracts were awarded to favored firms that secretly paid kickbacks to CDR, not always the firm offering the highest returns, the government alleged.

Rubin, who sobbed at Friday’s plea hearing in New York, is scheduled to be sentenced April 27. He had unsuccessfully requested a delay in his trial to be with his wife, who is dying of cancer, Bloomberg News reported.

Two former CDR executives are scheduled to stand trial on similar charges next week in federal court in Manhattan.

Rubin developed a niche helping local, county and state agencies invest money raised from bond issues for such things as school or road construction.

Because government agencies typically don’t need to use the money immediately, they often hire companies such as CDR to arrange short-term and longer-term deals to invest the funds.

The indictment alleged that CDR engaged in a pay-to-play scheme in which investment companies secretly paid CDR kickbacks to win government contracts. The alleged scheme cost the government agencies money because the contracts did not always go to investment providers offering the best return, the indictment said.

Rubin is the 10th person to plead guilty in an ongoing federal investigation of the municipal bond industry, the Justice Department said in a news release.

Federal prosecutors had amassed almost 800,000 tape recordings and 125 million pages of documents during a three-year investigation of CDR, defense lawyers said earlier this year, according to Bloomberg News.
